Ibleo Park

The Giardino Ibleo (9am–10pm, Fri–Sat until 1am), created in the 19th century around the church of San Giacomo (Fri–Sun 11am–1pm, 5–9pm), is a charming landscaped park set on a spur at the eastern end of Ibla. In spring, the statues, palm trees and pool are complemented by daffodils, broom and irises. Around the grounds are three ruined churches, victims of the 1693 earthquake, and a popular café. The multicoloured majolica dome of San Domenico overlooks Gothic San Giacomo, built on the site of a pagan temple, and the church of the Cappuccini, a Baroque monastic church. On the far side of the gardens on Via Normanni is the dilapidated 15th-century Gothic doorway to the church of San Giorgio Vecchio, with a relief depicting St George and the Dragon. Carved in soft local stone, this is all that remains of the original church destroyed in the earthquake that devastated Ragusa. From this uncharacteristically lush corner of old Ibla, both ancient locals and young lovers take time to look out over terraces and dry-stone walls to a valley encrusted with ancient Siculi tombs.
